Survival is Modern Warfare 3's Most Exciting Aspect
The best review for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, right here at Xploder!
With the dust settling and new multiplayer information on the table, Call of Duty"s inaugural convention has finally ended. Call of Duty XP revealed a lot of new information, but even with the tweaks and polish, for me, Survival mode in Spec Ops is the best element ofCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 3revealed so far.
My initialpreview of Modern Warfare 3"s multiplayerasked if the changes were enough to win over new fans. Strike Packages bring class-style options to the table, but longtime Call of Duty fans can still run and gun their way through Assault killstreaks and ignore the Support and Specialist elements all together. They"re an interesting choice, but not required to be competitive.
Because the changes in multiplayer don"t appear to elevate Modern Warfare 3 to a new level, I believe that Survival mode is the game"s ace in the hole. Despite polarizing arguments for and against Call of Duty, the series is insanely popular. Anyone comfortable with the original Modern Warfare"s multiplayer will feel right at home four years later in the latest version. That"s why I feel it may take an entirely new way to play to reignite what made the game so fun in the first place.
Survival isn"t an original idea. If you caught my look at theevolution of Tower Defensea few weeks ago, you"ll know a little bit about the history of survival. Combining the fast-paced gunplay of Call of Duty with wave after wave of enemies becomes a really fun challenge. Two players scramble for money in order to buy new weapons, airstrikes, AI support, body armor, and more. When else have you been terrified to let your teammate bleed out in a Call of Duty game?
Every Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer map is available in Survival mode, and each map requires different tactics. Battling the open courtyards of the Resistance map in Paris requires a different style of play than the close-quarters of the desert map Dome.
These changing tactics and the reliance on your partner alter the pace of the game. Each wave is a surprise and you may get blindsided by two Juggernauts at a time while scrambling for the cash to simply refill your weapons. The immediacy of helping your partner and the impending danger of endless enemy waves provide frantic fun. This is not zombies and a far cry from the low cost of life and death in general Call of Duty multiplayer.
Granted, I"ve only played a few matches of Survival. But for a series that thrives on polish over drastic overhauls in standard multiplayer, this new mode is a breath of fresh air. I approached Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 with an air of skepticism, but came out the other side impressed by Survival. I"m looking forward to playing Survival on the rest of Modern Warfare 3"s maps and curious to see how the final package comes together.
