Nintendo"s E3 press conference is scheduled for Tuesday morning, but according to Japanese subscription news service Nikkei (via GameSpot), two of their big game announcements may have been revealed early. Nikkei reports that Nintendo plans to release a new Mario game and Wii Fit Plus in Japan by the end of this year.
Wii Fit Plus isn"t exactly what a forum dweller might call a megaton, considering 1) Wii Fit has sold about a bajillion copies, making a sequel inevitable; 2) that the name "Wii Fit Plus" was recently copyrighted by Nintendo in Japan, along with the above logo; and 3) the title even recently appeared on a mysterious release listing from an unknown retailer supposedly in Amsterdam. According to Nikkei"s report, Wii Fit Plus will have the added benefit of online functionality, enabling players "to compete with each other over the Internet." Wii Fit Plus will also have "gentle exercises for the elderly, and will respond to player inputs more precisely than the current version."
Details are even scarcer for the new Mario game, as the report doesn"t indicate whether it"s a full-fledged sequel like Super Mario Galaxy, or a new entry in one of the many spin-off Mario franchises. In fact, it doesn"t even specifically mention whether it"ll be on the Wii or DS. But considering the next sentence goes on to say Nintendo wants to "bolster" their Wii lineup, it seems likely this game is headed for the Wii.
