Can"t say we"re much surprised, but Microsoft is doing a little gloating all the same: They claim that Grand Theft Auto 4: The Lost and Damned, the first of two exclusive downloadable expansions for the Xbox 360 version of the game, has "eclipsed first-day revenue for all previous downloadable content on Xbox Live" (via GameSpot).
Considering the expansion costs $20 (relatively expensive compared to most XBLA DLC), and considering that GTA4 is, as you probably well know, somewhat popular, it"s not a big surprise that the Lost and Damned would have broken revenue records. Unfortunately, we can"t know exactly what Microsoft means by "eclipsed," though, because they failed to provide any specific figures to back up their claims. Just how many copies of the Lost and Damned have been downloaded wasn"t revealed, nor what previously held the first-day revenue record before the expansion"s release.
But big sales of the expansion is exactly what Microsoft needs if they hope to recoup what it cost them to have it grace their console. In case you"ve forgotten, Microsoft paid Take-Two a staggering $50 million to secure the two exclusive downloadable expansion packs for the 360 version of GTA4, giving them a marketable advantage over the PlayStation 3 version.
