Sony shocked insiders several weeks ago by announcing that the PlayStation 3's distinctive controller would have an extra surprise -- motion-sensing technology that would allow players to issue commands by tilting, leaning, and guiding the controller.
The E3 announcement triggered suspicions that Sony had merely crammed the extra functionality inside the controller in order to short-circuit Nintendo's Wii buzz, but Sony has insisted this isn't the case.
Enter Yves Guillemot, president of the phenominally successful French software publisher Ubisoft (of Splinter Cell and Rainbow Six fame). In a yet-to-be-broadcast installment of Eurogamer TV, Guillemot says that Ubisoft was "so happy to see that Sony was taking that direction" with its embedded motion sensors. Without going into specifics, he also says that the PS3 controller will enable a "better experience" for gamers, and that Ubisoft will take full advantage of the controller's capabilities.
This resounding vote of confidence could be just what Sony needs to re-instill a sense of unity and solidarity behind the controversial controller design.
