
A lot more goes into the development of a game than the world ever ends up seeing, and in the long, storied process of Team Fortress 2"s making, that"s especially true. But in a post on Valve"s official TF2 blog, they"re giving the world a fascinating -- and by their own assessment, "embarrassing" -- view at what the Scout looked like early in production.
What you see above is the very first design for the Scout when the team originally decided to take the game in a more stylized, cartoony direction. According to Robin Walker, the post"s author, this design was when "We thought that a wired-up-on-coffee bike messenger had the right body shape for the Scout, and would provide a variety of fun animation possibilities." Kind of looks like Owen Wilson, if you ask us. Below is a later version of the design:
