As part of a series of financial reports following the end of the first fiscal quarter, Nintendo has revealed new lifetime sales totals for a few of their most popular games -- and the results are quite stunning. The biggest success has, unsurprisingly, been Wii Sports, which now sits at 47.62 million units sold worldwide. Totals for Mario Kart Wii and Wii Fit were also announced, with lifetime global sales of 17.39 million and 21.82 million respectively.
Wii Sports, of course, has the added benefit of being bundled with Wiis in certain countries (including the U.S.), although it"s also sold separately in some countries as well (including Japan). But even without the help of being bundled with the console -- and even with what you would think would be the handicap of being bundled with an expensive Balance Board -- Wii Fit has still managed to break 20 million worldwide, clearly showing gamers have a surprisingly large hunger for exercise.
While these are fantastic numbers for Nintendo, it wasn"t all good news this week, as their year-to-year first quarter profit dropped a whopping 60 percent compared to 2008. But with Wii Sports Resort having just hit retail, and with Wii Fit Plus on the way later this year, we have a feeling Nintendo has at least a couple of more multi-million-selling hits in their portfolio.
